I've signed on to fundraise for the TD Hub on Wheels Citywide Bike Ride because I believe so strongly in all the amazing things Boston Children's Hospital does for kids.
As many of you know, Boston Children's Hospital administered care for our son Lucas until he passed. He was born September 18, 2015 at Baystate Franklin Medical Center, Greenfield, MA. Soon after, Heather and I noticed something wasn't quite right. After being transferred to Baystate Children's, we were discharged, with a good outlook on his health. Not long after, we were rushing Lucas' back to the hospital and re-admitted to the NICU at Baystate Children’s. After several days of receiving care at Baystate, Heather and I decided to have Lucas moved to Boston Children's. After tests and CT Scans over several days, we were met with the grim words of the doctors "we need to discuss the quality of life". Lucas was essentially paralyzed, from contracting meningitis, due to an immunodeficiency disorder. He couldn't move his limbs or breathe on his own, but could blink and make eye contact. We both made the decision that no parent should ever have to; Lucas passed away in our arms during the early hours of October 20th. They say time heals, but I don't find that true. I feel the same pain now that I did almost 2 years ago. I find peace that he is no longer in pain. While this ride is directed toward the cancer center at Boston Children's, I'm riding and fundraising in order to give back to the hospital for going above and beyond for our family during our time in need. They continue to reach out frequently to check in. Thank you for your support.
