Running for Cystic Fibrosis and Boston Children's Hospital... Because Everyone Should Be Able To Live Their Dreams!
Hello everyone! My name is Matt Edwards and I am both honored and excited to run in the 2017 Boston Marathon on behalf of my patient partner, Kate, her family and the Credit Unions Kids at Heart team. I have always wanted to run the Boston Marathon but to run it on behalf of such a wonderful person, family, and cause will make it a dream come true!
Kate is 26-years-old and a Massachusetts native. She loves traveling, playing and watching hockey (GO BRUINS!), dogs, and volunteering for her community. Kate also has cystic fibrosis (CF), a rare, progressive genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. CF causes a thick, buildup of mucus in the lungs, which can limit the ability to breath and can lead to infections. Kate is one of the 30,000 people in the United States (~70,000 worldwide) with CF.
Kate and many others like her in the CF community inspire me because… they do not let CF define them. Even with the physical and emotional exhaustion that comes with CF, they continue to be resilient and push forward. To use Kate’s own words; “To be jaded about having CF would be too easy. I may have half the time, but I have double the determination to make this life worth living.” And she has done just that… she’s graduated college, is a successful businesswomen, she has traveled all over the world, and on top of all of that she advocates on behalf of the CF community to help others like her. Kate inspire me everyday - to dig deeper, to do more, to explore the “what ifs,” and work harder.
The Credit Unions Kids @ Heart program is one of the largest credit union collaborative fundraising programs in the nation. The funds raised through the Credit Unions Kids at Heart team benefit several pediatric research projects at Boston Children’s Hospital.
I appreciate all the support of my family, friends, colleagues, DCU Kids @ Heart, and the CF community as I push towards my running and fundraising goals for the Boston Marathon. I would never be able to do it without all of you motivating and inspiring me! Please feel free to send this page to others if you think they would be interested in supporting.
