Hi, My name is Asim Mian and I will be running my first ever marathon this coming April as part of the Credit Unions Kids @ Heart team. I could not imagine a better, more motivating cause and am honored to be running for my patient partner Vraj .
Vraj is an amazing and inspiring five year old boy. Vraj was born prematurely with a rare genetic chromosomal deletion depletion syndrome which resulted in a number of conditions including brain hypoplasia, cerebral palsy, reactive airway disease, global developmental delay, visual and hearing impairment, and seizures. Though non-verbal, Vraj use's his facial expressions and gestures to communicate and express himself. And despite his many health uncertainties, Vraj, with his remarkable spirit, is defying all odds and making progress as his mom so beautifully says "at his own pace and shining through it all"!
Currently, Vraj is a kindergartener at the LABBB collaborative school where he delights in being with his classmates and teachers. A year younger than my own son Daniyal, I am struck by so many of their shared interests. Vraj loves music, playing with his Oball and swinging on the playground. And he loves reading books- Dr. Seuss being a favorite.
For my wife Amy, my son Daniyal, and I, these next six months ahead will be an exciting family journey as well. Being a part of the Kids @ Heart community of support for these incredible kids and getting to know all the patients, families and runners involved is truly an honor for us. I can think of no more important cause to support than the remarkable, tireless efforts of the doctors and researchers at Children's Hospital on behalf of Vraj and so many other children and families whose lives their work and care touches in such critical ways. One hundered percent of the funds we raise for the CU Kids @ Heart team go directly to support four research programs: Moyamoya disease, Sturge-weber Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and Pediatric Brain Tumors. This means that every dollar raised makes a real difference- a new clinical trial, a new researcher, a new breakthrough, a cure.
I very much hope you will consider supporting Vraj and me and cheering for us loudly on Marathon Monday, April 17.
