Rooted Cape Cod
This year, Team Rooted is Raising money to help support Boston Children's Hospital and the amazing work they do for Sick children and their families. We would like to honor our friend Jessica Halford and her daughter Isla who credit Boston Children's Hospital for giving Isla the gift of life. Please read her touching story below and contribute in her honor to help other families like Isla's who are battling for their children's lives and wellbeing.
Friends and Family,
As you all know, Boston Children’s Hospital has played a pivotal role in my family’s lives. On February 12, 2015, they gave my youngest daughter, Isla Winnie, the gift of life. A life that would no longer be defined by unpredictable, long hospital stays. A life that allowed her to be a normal toddler, free of ivs, NG tubes, monitors, countless procedures and surgeries. We will forever be grateful to the nurses, doctors, specialists, and various other heroes who work at BCH in hopes of giving every child and their families a chance of normalcy.
When my daughter and I were impatient time after time, we never found ourselves without something to do. The volunteers, social workers, playrooms, and Wellness Program always had creative, stimulating, and age-appropriate activities to occupy Isla. These opportunities were rich and encouraged her to explore, learn, and socialize with other kids. Most importantly, they shifted her focus from being sick and needing treatments to focusing on what every young kid seeks... FUN!!! Watching her smile and connect gave me hope and encouragement. Making goop, being part of floor read alouds, having playroom dance parties, watching movies with other kiddos, partaking in magic shows, crafting turkeys at Thanksgiving, listening to The Cat In The Hat read aloud on Read Across America Day, and getting some extra tlc from the service dogs who snuggled up to us are all examples of experiences that got us out of bed and made us leave our little home on the surgical floor.
The Wellness Center also provided me with refuge when I needed a quiet space, something to read, a place to make calls, or to take advantage of restorative treatments for myself. You see, when your child is in the hospital, there’s only so much you can do for her. It’s extremely difficult to put your faith in the hands of others but you’ve got to find the strength and will to do just that. The best thing you can do for your child (that you have control over) is to advocate for her and show her how to be brave. That means smiling, even if you are breaking inside. The Wellness Center at BCH helped me with that. They have so many outlets for parents who are trying to cope with the most stressful reality anyone can imagine. During our stays, I took advantage of their programs like yoga, Reiki, meditation, and counseling all of which helped me cope and relax when I thought that was impossible. They gave me minutes of peace, opportunities to clear my head, and chances to be kind to my body. And of course, this all contributed to providing Isla with the best care. Unbelievably, all of these services were completely covered by the hospital. The Wellness Center offered to be there for me... to be there for thousands of families as a resource as well as a comforting place where we all had a hand to hold or a shoulder to cry on. I will forever be grateful for this sanctuary and the healing supports kindly extended to me and my family.
I am participating in Yoga Reaches Out because I want to help Boston Children's Hospital continue its amazing work for kids and families. During this day-long yogathon, 1,000 yogis will come together for an inspirational day of yoga, music, and fundraising - all to help bring peace and healing to others.
This year donations will benefit the Wellness Program at Boston Children's.
Please support me in helping give strength to familes coping with a sick child. We are shining examples of the miracles that happen every day at BCH. Thank you and much love to you and yours.
