As you may know, our grandson Ari was born July 16, 2013 as a healthy little newborn. None of us were aware of Ari's condition until 10 days after birth when he stopped breathing. They came to Boston Children's Hospital 2 days later after being at both Brockton Hospital and Tufts Hospital. We were scared, and had not yet accepted that our grandson was just born with a life-threatening Congenital Heart Defect. Ari was born with a severe coarctation of the aorta, a bicuspid aortic valve, and a growth on his mitral valve. He had open heart surgery at 13 days old and was hospitalizedfor about a month total between the surgical hospitalization and two more hospitalizations for infections of the surgical site.
Ari is now 3 years old and doing amazing. He was just cleared for one year after his latest echocardiogram in December. We remain hopeful and optimistic that his surgical repairs have held up amazingly!
I want to thank those of you who those who donated in the past in Ari's honor to our walk. Team Ari the Brave was such a success two years ago and has evolved and grown into Team Mended Little Hearts of Boston. As some of you may know, almost three years ago our daughter co-founded a local chapter of Mended Little Hearts with another local heart mom. They have grown into a wonderful organization and I am so proud of the work they have done. They provide support services, advocacy, education, and more to members of the local heart community.
