What a difference a year makes. When Ethan was in the Boston Children's MSICU last year, we remember seeing posters promoting the annual Eversource walk. The peace and hope on the faces of the people in those pictures seemed lightyears away. But now, we're ready to join them.
During a routine ultrasound while Lauren was pregnant, Ethan was diagnosed with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH), which is a complex birth defect with no known cause. Days later, we were referred to the Advanced Fetal Care Center at Boston Children's, where we met Donna, the CDH program nurse, and Dr. C. Jason Smithers, Ethan's surgeon (also known as our superhero-in-scrubs). Donna and Dr. Smithers helped us understand Ethan's prognosis and develop a plan for his birth, surgery, and follow-up care. Dr. Smithers even made a point to come across the street to Brigham & Women's Hospital to be present in the delivery room when Ethan was born.
In the six weeks Ethan lived at Boston Children's after birth, we were impressed by countless doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, nutritionists, social workers, child life specialists, and more, all working collaboratively with thorough understanding of Ethan's condition. In fact, over the last two decades, Boston Children's has set the standard in care for children with CDH by taking this team approach, as well as fostering critical research as a Harvard Medical School affiliated teaching hospital.
These days, Ethan returns to Boston Children's every few months for check-ups in the CDH Clinic where a team of surgeons, pulmonologists, cardiologists, nutritionists, and development specialists are tracking the longitudinal success of their patients. And in between visits, these providers make themselves available to both us and our local pediatrician for phone calls, emails, even text messages. As parents dealing with a complex medical condition, it is an amazing feeling to have the confidence that these experts always have our son's back. It's what we would wish for any parent.
We hope you will join us in supporting this world-class institution, which will always have a very special place in our hearts, by giving whatever amount is meaningful to you, or by sharing your words of encouragement. Thank you.
