Team Tenacious Grace
Our daughter, Grace Goulet, was taken by ambulance to Boston Children's Hospital on February 12, 2018. She was diagnosed with Bacterial Meningitis and Septic Shock. The amazing ER staff saved her life that morning, and discovered an underlying condition; Asplenia. Grace is a rare child who was born without a spleen, making her more prone and less able to fight off bacterial infections. Grace spent 8 days in the ICU of 7S where brilliant doctors, nurses and specialists took her from critical to stable condition. She then moved to 7 West where her healing continued and the process of rehabilitation was started. In total, she spent 21 days at Boston Children's Hospital.
After a two week stay at a local rehabilitation hospital, Grace is now back home with us. She is still recovering. Her journey will include many future trips to BCH as she continues to heal, and also as we learn to manage her Asplenia. It's a journey, but Grace is on it with us. This is true because of BCH. This is true because in past years families raised money so that Boston Children's Hospital can do the work they do. The people who were at BCH are the smartest and most compassionate people I have had the privilege to encounter. The hospital cared for Grace, but also supported my whole family during the worst hours and days of our life. The hospital facility itself has the state of the art equiptment that allowed life saving scans and measures to be taken without delay.
Grace is alive because of Children's Hospital. Because of the doctors, the nurses, the blood bank (5 blood transfusions), as well as the support staff; therapists, social workers, chaplains, administrators, custodians, food service providers etc. She is here because of the research that has been done, and the facilities that have been built. The facilities, the research, all must continue to be updated and maintained in order to continue to provide the care the hospital is capable of providing. This requires money. Ongoing money.
Nobody wants to imagine that their child is going to need the highest level of medical care. Most families don't need to imagine this. But it happens, and when it does you want to be able to go to Boston Children's Hospital.
We are walking to pay forward the gift of life that Grace received. We are walking so that every child can have the kind of medical care that Grace received and continues to receive these past few months.
I'm fundraising on behalf of Boston Children's Hospital because:
I BELIEVE no parent should experience the loss of a child.
I BELIEVE no sibling should have to watch their brother or sister suffer.
I BELIEVE that by investing in the best doctors and scientists we can save lives - today!
I BELIEVE that donations received before today helped a child I love and
I BELIEVE that every dollar I raise for Boston Children's Hospital will have a ripple effect and could be THE dollar that changes everything for a future family in crisis.
Please consider a donation to support my fundraising efforts... because I KNOW that when we band together WE WILL help fund Boston Children's exceptional care and groundbreaking research that can help every child.
